Be Kind to Your Mind | #WorldMentalHealthDay

Today we’re celebrating World Mental Health Day! Mental health is so important and it is something we often don’t prioritize in our busy lives. So, to celebrate this special day, we will discuss the history of this day, the importance of mental health, and 5 tips for improving your own mental health!

History Behind World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first observed in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in many countries.

Why Mental Health Is Important

Mental health is defined by the World Health Organization as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. So, without a healthy mental state, it’s hard to live one’s life to their fullest.

Tips for Improving Your Mental Health

  • Meditate

Mediation is the practice of thinking deeply or focusing one’s mind for a period of time. While there are many forms of meditation, the ultimate goal is a feeling of relaxation and inner peace, which can improve mental health. Mediation guides can be found online and apps for your phone are available as well!

  • Stay active

Staying active is not only good for your physical health, but your mental health as well. This does not always mean intense workouts either. A simple walk in the park is just as beneficial. Just find activities that you truly enjoy and can do for about 30 minutes 5 times a week!

  • Talk about your feelings

Talking about your feelings with others isn’t always easy, but it’s a great way to cope with any problems you’ve been dealing with internally. If you don’t quite feel comfortable talking about your feelings with friends or family, seeing a therapist is especially helpful.

  • Sleep

Lack of sleep has the potential to affect our bodies and mind in so many ways, including affecting our mental health. It is recommended that adults get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Even going to bed 30 minutes earlier each night can greatly improve your mood and mental health.

  • Take a vacation

Let’s be honest, working in the healthcare field takes a lot out of you. As much as we love our jobs, it’s important to take a break every now and then. Taking a vacation or even just a quick weekend getaway helps you clear your mind and boost your mental health.
